Progressive Transport Owners’ Association of Ghana “PROTOA”

was formed in the year 1980 in Kumasi with the name “Ashanti Transport Owners’ Association. Later, the name was changed to Progressive Transport Owners’ Association – Ghana. And with the approval of the Registrar of Companies, it was incorporated under the Companies Code 1963 (Act 179), on the 15th Day of February 1982, as a limited liability company by guarantee.

The Association aimed at promoting the interest of its members through pooling of resources and utilizing the collective guarantee of its membership to attract needed investments to undertake road transportation and other related projects.

The Association in its foundational years was headquartered in Kumasi, which is the capital city of the Ashanti Region; however, because it had assumed a national character, it became necessary to move the Headquarters to Accra by special resolution.

Membership was initially limited to owners of big buses, cargo and articulated trucks. In 1988, membership was opened to owners and drivers of mini buses and cabs.
